Family Photography at Cairns Botanic Gardens After Rain

The air feels fresh and humid, the tropical plants look incredibly green, and everything from the rainforest paths to the rocks and streams seems to come alive.

But shooting in overcast conditions also comes with one challenge:

The light can feel very flat.

There is no strong sunlight and very little contrast between light and shadow. The environment looks beautiful, but faces can sometimes lose a little definition and separation from the background.

For this session, I used a simple solution:

Don't be afraid to use flash on an overcast day

A lot of people think flash is mainly for indoor photography or night shoots.

But I actually find a small amount of on-camera flash useful when photographing outdoors on an overcast day.

The goal isn't to make the subject look obviously “lit”.

It is simply about adding a little light where it is needed.

The rainforest already provides a beautiful atmosphere, so I don't want to overpower it with artificial light. I keep the flash subtle, adding just enough definition to the face while allowing the soft ambient light in the background to remain.

When it works well, you shouldn't necessarily notice the flash.

You just notice that the person has a little more depth and separation from the environment.

Let the kids play. I'll follow.

For me, family photography isn't about having everyone stand still and say:

“Look at the camera and smile.”

Of course, there is a place for those photographs.

But I prefer to see what happens when children are actually being themselves.

At the Botanic Gardens, they can walk, run, splash in the water, look at plants, climb on safe rocks and explore their surroundings.

Instead of constantly directing them, I prefer to move with them.

A quick glance back.

A little reaction after stepping into a puddle.

Turning around to find Mum or Dad.

Sitting on a rock and getting lost in their own thoughts.

Or simply laughing without looking at the camera.

These moments may not look like the traditional “perfect pose”, but years later, they can be the photographs that bring back the strongest memories.

Not just what everyone looked like, but what that day actually felt like.

Why I like Cairns Botanic Gardens for family photography

The tropical landscape around Cairns Botanic Gardens already gives us everything we need for a natural family session.

There is no need for elaborate setups or complicated props.

The tropical greenery, wet ground, rocks, streams and soft overcast light can become part of the story themselves.

For family photography, I prefer the photographs to feel connected to the experience of travelling together, rather than looking like a collection of carefully staged portraits.

If you're visiting Cairns and looking for a relaxed, natural setting for family photographs, Cairns Botanic Gardens is one of the locations I really enjoy working in.

Especially after rain.

The greenery becomes richer, the air feels fresh, and the soft morning light creates a very gentle atmosphere.

My job is then simply to find the right perspective, shape the light when necessary, and wait for those small moments that belong to your family.

A few notes from this session

01 | Timing

This session was photographed between 9:00 and 10:00 AM.

The morning light was soft and comfortable, without the harsher conditions of midday.

02 | Don't give up on an overcast day

Overcast light can be beautiful for portraits.

If faces feel a little flat, a subtle amount of on-camera flash can add definition while keeping the natural atmosphere.

03 | Less posing, more movement

Rather than asking children to constantly pose, let them walk, run, explore and play.

I'll follow their movement and look for the moments in between.

04 | Be mindful after rain

Rocks, paths and areas around the streams can become slippery after rain, so safety always comes first when children are exploring.

A final thought

I don't think the best family photograph is necessarily the most “perfect” one.

Sometimes it is a very small moment.

A child isn't looking at the camera.

The parents aren't perfectly posed.

The composition might not even be perfectly symmetrical.

But years later, you look at the photograph and remember the weather, the smell of the rainforest, the feeling of being on holiday, and what it was like to be together that day.

That's what I love about documentary-style family photography.

I'm not trying to manufacture a memory.

I'm trying to preserve one that is already happening.
